Kids in Patagonia
Day 2: Visit Penguins, Wildlife and Milodon. Night Hosteria.
After breakfast we will start the day's adventures with a drive out to see the cute burrowing Magellanic penguins at the Otway Sound Penguin Colony. Penguins are fascinating for anybody but especially for children. Walk the boardwalks and observe and photograph the quaint behaviour of these interesting animals as they go to and fro between their burrows and the nearby beach.

When we have had our fill of penguins we will continue a short distance to Estancia Lolita. A real one of its kind estancia, this local farming family has been taking in sick, injured or orphaned animals from the local area and looking after them for a number of years. For many of the locals and especially the children in the city of Punta Arenas, this will be the only opportunity they get to observe some of the unusual wildlife that exists in their backyard.

Obviously the animals they have at a given time is uncertain but you can usually see armadillos, condors, pumas, Jeffrey's cat and more.

After some time spent wandering around this estancia, we will be continuing on towards Puerto Natales situated beside the waters of Last Hope Sound. After lunch in this quaint town with its souvenir shops and a good selection of cafes and restaurants, we will be heading north to the Milodon Cave. Made famous by Bruce Chatwin, this enormous cave is home to a life size replica of a giant prehistoric sloth, the Milodon.

Drive north to the beautifully situated Hosteria Tres Pasos situated at the head of a magical valley with pretty gardens, flower filled meadows and lovely old barns. With its large main house reminiscent of an English country home staying here feels like a weekend with friends. The spacious light filled rooms are cosy and the main rooms are welcoming with wood floors and fires to relax in front of. For the kids, the gardens are extensive and a great place for exploring or playing and seek.

Night in twin share accommodation or family rooms if you prefer. All meals included (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

New Estancia option: Drive to Laguna Azul in the north eastern section of the Park. Pack day packs for the moderate walk east to Estancia Tercera. Stop en route to photograph the wildlife or pick calafate berries. Arrive at the Estancia and settle into the very comfortable and authentic homestay accommodation. Afternoon horse ride in the vicinity of the estancia (suitable for any level). Dinner and night at Estancia Tercera.
Giant Milodon Sloth
Day 3: Drive to Torres del Paine for day hiking. Camp.
After breakfast, we will be driving into Torres del Paine to enjoy a full day exploring the magnificent scenery and wildlife opportunities in the area.

Options include hikes to nearby waterfalls and mountain lookouts, a stroll through the summer breeding grounds for guanaco or general wildlife spotting activites in the vicinity. We can also stop at the unusual Laguna Amarga (bitter lake) with its salt encrusted lakeshores and contrastingly blue waters.

Other activities include a walk to the Salto Grande waterfall, time spent on the lakeshores of Laguna Azul and hunting for Calafate berries on the pampas and Patagonian scrublands.

The scenery today is quite spectacular and includes monstrous granite peaks, crystal clear turquoise lakes, beautiful valleys and waterfalls to say nothing of the exotic wildlife in the area.

Extra possibilities that might amuse the kids include fishing in the salmon-stocked waters of the Serrano River or horse riding. Note riding is not included in the trip price.

After our full day we will be driving to the Serrano River and the beautifully located campsite close to the river. Weather permitting we will dine around the fire enjoying the freedom of being outside while our cook prepares dinner.

Campsite facilities include indoor dining in case of bad weather, fire pits, bathrooms and toilets.

All meals included (with wine at dinner).

New Estancia Option: Full day exploring Torres del Paine as above including a visit to Lago Grey. Night back at Estancia Tercera.

Sunrise Camping
Day 4: Grey II boat to glacier. Return to Natales. Hotel.
After breakfast, we will be walking down to the nearby Lake beach and boarding the Grey II boat which will take us across the normally ice-choked lake towards the face of Grey Glacier.

This is an up close and personal encounter with a vertical tower of ice. A unique experience and something for the kids to share with their class mates when they return home.

After we return to the boat dock we will enjoy a picnic in a suitably pretty location and we will spend the remainder of the day touring the area. We will visit the Park Administration centre with its relief map of the Park and local information, undertake some short hikes and look for wildlife.

Late afternoon return to Puerto Natales for a night in the colourful, cute Hostel Amerindia. This centrally located small hotel provides a great option for families with comfortable en suite rooms decorated in bright colours and an adjacent cafe serving delicious cakes and chocolates. A real treat for the kids.

After a shower and some time to relax and explore this cute waterside town, we will go out for dinner in one of the town's many excellent restaurants.

All meals included today (wine/drinks available at extra cost).

New Estancia option: After an early breakfast of home baked bread and cakes we will be driving across the heart of the Park to the Serrano River. Here we will be boarding a zodiac for an exciting trip down river out of Torres del Paine and through the pristine Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, the largest in the country. As we make our way down river through the fjords and forests of this part of Patagonia we can admire the views and variety of birdlife that inhabit these waterways. Arrive at the Serrano Glacier for a short walk before we board the cutter which will take us across Last Hope Sound back to Puerto Natales. En route we will be stopping for a traditional gaucho lamb BBQ at a stunning waterside estancia. Arrive into Natales at approximately 1800 hours. Trip ends in Natales. We can book an extra night here on request.

Estancia Option priced from US$1,475 per person. If you would like to mix both trips and combine elements of each one, just contact us for a custom proposal and price.
