Isolated Glaciers and Silent Waterways
Bernardo o'Higgins National Park
Situated 31 miles north of Puerto Natales, next to the Torres del Paine National Park, this beautiful and pristine area is becoming more and more accessible. It offers a novel water-borne way to enter or exit Torres del Paine. Two large boats ferry visitors from the quayside in Puerto Natales to the stunning Serrano Glacier, which is set amid native forests. The rest of the journey can be made on zodiacs or kayaks depending on the direction.
Highlights include the Balmaceda hanging glacier, Tyndall, Geike and Serrano glaciers and the beautiful Mount Balmaceda, which stands at 2,035 metres. An authentic working estancia in this area offers horses for rent and can arrange gaucho roasts.

Wildlife is plentiful, especially birds, ducks and geese. Native forests are scattered around a complicated network of fjords, which run into the ever-flowing Serrano River. This in turn spills into Last Hope Sound.

Tourism is still relatively rare in this dramatically beautiful area which makes for some fantastic wild camping experiences. Relax fireside and enjoy the silence of nature. Feast on Patagonian lamb prepared beautifully by your hosts all washed down with ample supplies of Chilean wine. Camp on one of the many river beaches under the stars made all the more spectacular by the complete lack of any light pollution - a rare sight in this populated world we live in.

On arrival in Puerto Natales, stay in one of the town's many lovely hotels - from the beautifully situated Indigo Spa to the eco-hotel Altiplanico, there is a choice to suit all tastes and budgets.
