Horse Riding In Patagonia

All Activities

What we offer…

Starting out 25+ years ago with our flagship Glacier Ride we introduced riders to the jaw droppingly beautiful scenery in southern Chile and especially Torres del Paine with our fast paced riding expeditions on fit Criollo horses.

Summary

We were the first company to offer long riding trips in the area and our ground-breaking itineraries, quality guides, professional service and conscious promotion of the local gaucho culture have made these some of the world’s most unforgettable riding experiences.

Guided by an expert Chilean guide and looked after by baqueanos, the famous cowboys of the south, Blue Green Adventures will take you deep into this riders’ paradise away from the main trails and into the Patagonian wilderness.

We have grown since those early days and our renowned 10-day Glacier Ride has had a refresh (see below). We also offer a range of other multi-day point to point riding trips such as our comfortable Estancia Ride and a menu of shorter rides for those with limited time.

Another new addition to our riding menu is an exciting Wild Horse round up where experienced adventurous riders will become a gaucho for a few days and help a local estanciera with rounding up, counting and treating wild horses as part of a bigger conservation project to protect these horses and give them sanctuary.

Specializing in both scheduled riding tours with small intimate groups of experienced riders and custom departures for couples, families with children or groups we can organize a riding vacation to suit just about anybody.

In addition to the rides operated by us in southern Patagonia, we work with a handful of equally passionate and innovative riding partners in Patagonia and elsewhere in Chile and Argentina.

Please see below for a selection of our most loved riding trips.

Tack

The tack is Chilean and comprises metal framed saddles onto which is layered felt, sheepskin and leather. Rope, rawhide and leather form the bridles, girths, straps etc. The saddles provide adequate comfort for the long riding days and the stirrups consist of a leather cup through which the foot cannot pass. Most of the horses are ridden in simple snaffles. Halters are worn throughout the ride with a rope tied around the horses neck to enable us to tie up at lunch stops/rest stops.

The Horses

It now turns out that the native Tehuelche people of Patagonia were galloping across the plains of Patagonia on horseback long before the first historical records of horses in the area. A new study published in Science in December 2023, co-written by William Taylor, an archaeologist at the University of Colorado says “it’s safe to assume horse riding was part of the package in Patagonia, just as it was on the Great Plains [USA]. By 1741, British accounts noted that the Tehuelche were masterful riders”

We offer the opportunity to relive the lives of these horsemen as you ride out with their descendants, the baqueanos. These modern-day horsemen have preserved many ancestral customs blending indigenous traditions with gaucho culture. They continue to navigate the rugged Patagonian landscape with mastery and expertise, using knowledge passed down through generations. Baqueanos still employ traditional methods of animal herding, storytelling and crafting such as weaving and leatherwork reflecting the rich heritage of the Tehuelche. Their deep connection to the land and time-honoured practices offers a living link to the region’s history and provides a unique cultural insight to those who ride out with them.

The horses you will ride are Criollos and Criollo crosses. Descendants of the Spanish Barb and Arab, the Criollo is a sturdy, sure-footed and willing ride. Generally fairly small by European standards at between 14.2 and 15.0 hands, they are strong nonetheless.

After riding from Argentina to Washington in the 1930s, A F Tschiffely wrote:

“I have been able to prove that the Criollo horse is worthy of the reputation he has always held among the few that really know him, namely that of being second to none for continuous hard work under any conditions” (A F Tschiffely, Tschiffely’s Ride).

We are able to provide horses suitable for both experienced riders and those who are more rusty. The pace of the ride is adjusted by the guide to suit the majority of riders but as we always travel with more than one horseman, there is flexibility within the group and riders soon find their own pace for the trip. Riders are not responsible for grooming or tack. Horses are checked constantly for injury and/or lameness or tiredness. When necessary (and where it is practical/possible) horses will be changed. Depending on the length of your trip, most of you will experience at least one horse change during the course of your riding days. However, you will now be paired with the same horse throughout much of our new Glacier and Estancia Rides as we are able to move the horses from place to place by truck.

Fitness and riding experience

Riders on the scheduled group trips need to be experienced. As a general rule, you should be able to control a horse on open ground at the canter and be used to riding in open spaces. You should also be fairly fit and comfortable with long days in the saddle. Most riding days consist of between 25 – 40 kilometres on varied terrain.

On multi-activity trips, taster rides, custom and family departures we can accept riders of a lesser standard.

Custom, scheduled or private rides

Riders can choose from a scheduled group horse riding tour (see departure dates on the respective trip page where applicable) or we can arrange any of our itineraries as a custom or private trip for a minimum of two riders, subject to availability. This is a good option for those of you unsure of your experience or for families travelling with children. Solo riders are welcome on our group rides and there is generally no single supplement payable if you are prepared to share with another rider of the same gender.

Alicia Rivero

Alicia Ximena Rivero Álvarez was born in September 1965. She has a twin sister.  The family farm is called Hacienda 3R in honour of her late father, Rafael Rivero Rodríguez, who acquired it in 1962. Alicia has spent her entire life in the countryside and has always been passionate about rural life. Since she was a child, she has showed a strong interest in horses and the countryside.

Over the years, Alicia has been involved in the management of the family ranch, taking a broader approach that includes the protection of the wild (bagual) horses in the area. Recognizing the importance of these animals in local history and culture, Alicia has set out to preserve their existence. Additionally, she has challenged traditional gender roles by working side by side with men in the field and earning their respect.

Alicia considers that women play a fundamental role in rural areas and has assumed the many varied responsibilities involved in successful ranching including caring for the animals and working on the farm. Her vision is to strengthen the presence of women in the area by promoting participation and education in the rural environment. She is committed to supporting any local woman interested in working, learning about horses and joining her cause.

Alicia Rivero Álvarez is a homely, strong and multifaceted woman who has proven her worth as an estanciera (rancher) and who strives to preserve the traditions and importance of bagual horses in the region. Her determination and dedication are an inspiring example for women and girls in the region.

Estancia 3R / Sierra Baguales

Hacienda 3R, located 135 kilometers from Puerto Natales (approximately 2 hours by road), is located in the heart of Chilean Patagonia on the border with Argentina, flanked by the imposing mountain range of Sierra Baguales. With land extending to 6,000 hectares, this ranch has a history deeply rooted in the equine world.

In this remote corner of the southern Patagonia, the owner of the ranch, Alicia Rivero, is dedicated to preserving and protecting the few examples of the wild (bagual) horses that still live in the area. Her vision is to turn this land into a sanctuary for these majestic animals who in the past roamed freely. Today, after years of effort, she has managed to gather and protect at least 100 of these magnificent horses in the process of establishing a sanctuary for their protection.

The Work

The process of separating males that fail to integrate into the herd for subsequent training and veterinary care is a delicate and challenging task. At Hacienda 3R, work has been done to gradually identify the groups that are most trusting in the face of human presence. This is handled using natural horsemanship methods to separate the bagual horses in a respectful manner, based on communication and mutual respect, avoiding the use of force and aggression.

During your 3-day visit to the ranch, you will have the opportunity to witness up close the work that is being done in this unique environment. You will be able to get closer to the herds, participate in the separation of horses that need to be tamed and immerse yourself in the authenticity of rural life and gaucho tradition, establishing a special bond with these noble animals.

The wild horses of Sierra Baguales represent the essence of survival in its purest form; demonstrating exceptional resilience and adaptation to their natural environment.

*Please note the activities and riding on Days 2 and 3 will be decided according to the location of the horses, the weather and the work that has to be done*

  • Day 3: Day spent with Alicia working with the wild horses of Sierra Baguales. Night Estancia 3R as above. During your time at Estancia 3R you will be also be enjoying a Natural Horsemanship demonstration by renowned Patagonian Horse Whisperer, Abdias Puchi.
